Petar Stefanovic is an Orthodox Christian, and was born in Sydney, Australia in 1967 of Serbian parents. At the age of 20 he travelled to Europe where he spent the next decade. During that period he went to Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain in Greece to learn the spiritual art of iconography. Being accepted by the brethren of the Serbian monastery of Hilandar on the Holy Mountain he commenced his tutelage and later established a workshop in Hilandar from which he painted the monastery's icons for private collections in all parts of the world. Indeed Petar Stefanovic is one of the fortunate few who has had the opportunity to live on Mount Athos and learn about Orthodoxy from the monks. During his years in Europe he also worked extensively in Italy and was involved in an exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade. Following his return to Sydney in 1998 he has been painting icons for churches, monasteries, galleries and private collections, and has been featured in publications as well as appearing on national radio. Petar Stefanovic possesses an intimate knowledge and understanding of not only the techniques of iconography, but also of the meaning of icons, and all that being an Orthodox Christian encompasses. |
